Joel Lewittes is of counsel in the firm's Bankruptcy and Creditors' Rights Practice Group, where he concentrates his practice in the area of Chapter 11 reorganizations, particularly litigation in the Bankruptcy and Appellate Courts. Mr. Lewittes is a former United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York and prior to that appointment he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of New York in charge of litigation. He also served on the fee advisory committee in the Eastern Airlines bankruptcy case and as a mediator in numerous bankruptcy court controversies. In addition, Judge Lewittes has been appointed as a Chapter 11 Trustee and has testified, as a bankruptcy expert, in several Federal and State courts. Mr. Lewittes received his LL.B from Yale University
and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is admitted to practice
in New York State, the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Eastern,
and Northern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Second and Third Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. He is
also a former president of the Bankruptcy Lawyers Bar Association.
